The Volvo S100 saloon might just have a production future as patent drawings surface!

Volvo has been mulling a competitor to the likes of the Mercedes Benz S-Class, the BMW 7 Series and the Audi A8 saloons for quite a while now. Volvo even showcased the Volvo Concept Universea while ago, which was essentially a show car that gave us an insight on how the Volvo S100 might look like. Now, it seems that the Volvo S100 saloon might have a production future as patent drawings of a possible S-class competitor from Volvo have surfaced. The patent drawings appear very similar to the Concept Universe show car that Volvo showcased at last year’s Shanghai Auto Show.

Just like the show car, the patent drawings indicate suicide doors and a different design philosophy from Volvo, with a much more flatter front end. We think the front of the car in the patent drawings looks as ugly as a platypus’s bill although the production variant might see enough jazzing up to hide the flatness of the supposed Volvo S100′s hood. The patent drawings also retain the alloy wheel design that was first seen on the Concept Universe show car and also the futuristic looking wing mirrors. The rear end though harks back to the Volvos that we have currently, like the S60 and the S80.

Talking of which, Volvo does have cars like the S60 and the S80, which are competitors to the Teuton trio’s range of cars like the BMW 3-series, the Audi A4, the BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6. The Volvo S100, would thus be a logical progression for the Chinese owned Swedish brand. Apart from the basic design, other details about the Volvo S100 remains under wraps at the moment, and that includes production plans. Now that the patent drawings have surfaced, it might just be a matter of time before other details begin emerging. Watch this space.
