The 2012 Volvo XC60 Crossover SUV gets the detuned D3 diesel engine and along with it, a hefty price cut!
Days ago, we brought you a story in which we told you about Volvo launching the S60 sedan with a detuned diesel engine, called the D3, to make the price of the car more competitive. It seems that this engine will play a bigger role than just powering the Volvo S60. In fact, another Volvo car in India, the XC60 Crossover SUV will get the D3 diesel engine, and along with that a hefty price cut to boot. The Volvo XC60 with the D3 diesel engine will now be available at a starting price of INR 34.4 lakhs for the base Kinetic version, while the top end Summum variant will sell for INR 37.4 lakhs, both prices ex-showroom Delhi.
The D3 engine on the Volvo XC60, is a detuned variant of the D5, in-line five cylinder turbo diesel engine. In D3 guise, this engine produces a peak power of 163 Bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque. This engine is mated to a six speed automatic transmission with an all wheel drive system. The Volvo XC60 is a crossover from the Swedish automaker, and is pitted as competition to the likes of the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3. In comparison to the Audi and the Beemer, the Volvo XC60 is very well priced, considering that it is imported into the country as a completely built unit(CBU).
The BMW X3 and the Audi Q5, on the other hand are assembled in India through completely knocked down(CKD) kits. Though the price of the Volvo XC60 looks very attractive, Volvo India might still have a tough time selling this car due to the limited sales and service reach it has in India. To this date, Volvo has only 7 sales and service points in India, which is a minor speck when compared to the Teuton competition, and this is the biggest limiting factor for Volvo cars, which otherwise are quite comparable if not better than the competition in many aspects.
