The Chinese have made it to the podium of the world’s best selling cars in February 2013, a podium hitherto occupied by the Japanese, Germans or the Americans. We’re talking about the Wuling Hongguang, an MPV that has been developed jointly by Chinese automakers SAIC and Wuling, and American car giant General Motors. SAIC also happens to be General Motors’ partner in the Chinese car market. Notably, General Motors rebadges and sells the Wuling Hongguang MPV as the Chevrolet Enjoy in India and as the Chevrolet CN100 in other emerging car markets.
2013 Chevrolet Enjoy MPV
The Wuling Hongguang has just managed to bag 64,096 units in terms of sales during February 2013, a number that makes the MPV the third best selling car in the world for February 2013, next only to the likes of the Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus. General Motors has just lunched the Enjoy MPV in India and in the coming months, expect this launch to add to the numbers. That the Wuling Hongguang has made it to the podium of the global monthly sales charts speaks volumes about this MPVs success in its home market and elsewhere. This distinction also brings with it the sheer scale of the Chinese car market, the biggest in the world. The Wuling Hongguang MPV sold in China is available only with petrol engines.
In India though, the MPV, rebranded as the Chevrolet Enjoy, is available with a 1.3 liter turbo diesel engine, at a killer price to boot. The Chevrolet Enjoy/Wuling Hongguang was conceived as a low cost MPV for developing markets and the MPV has hit bulls eye in terms of sales right from word go. The Chevrolet Enjoy sold in India is available with both petrol and turbo diesel engines, a world first for this MPV, which is otherwise sold only in petrol engined guise. The Enjoy is available in a range of variants with the starting price at a very competitive 5.69 lakh rupees, ex-showroom Delhi. This pricing makes the Chevrolet Enjoy the best priced MPV in the Indian car market, undercutting the hot selling Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
