Yawn: One more Nano challenger in the making, this time from General Motors-SAIC

If you can’t beat ‘em, find someone who can. This seems to be General Motors India’s latest plan to take on the revolutionary Tata Nano. General Motors will tie up with Chinese auto maker, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation a.k.a SAIC, and will actively look for Chinese car makers who can design and build a car cheaper than or just as pricey as the Tata Nano. This is what Timothy J Lee, President, GM International Operations, had to say about GM’s Nanoesque plans.
We will look at every market segment and I wouldn’t rule out anything. When you harvest from your partnerships the collective wisdom of other cultures, it’s incredible what you can do.
Now, we’re getting bored with more talk than action going on in the Ultra Low Cost car space as we’ve only been hearing tall claims and plans while nobody really has come up with anything concrete to really rival the Tata Nano. Let’s hope that the General Motors-SAIC combine really comes up with something worth it’s salt to back up it’s lofty plans. If they don’t, people will soon start regarding every piece of news about a potential Nano rival as mere talk.
