Ashok Leyland will launch the Stile MPV, which is basically a badge engineered Nissan Evalia, before the festive season in India. After the Stile MPV, the next big launch for the Indian utility vehicle maker will be the passenger carrier based on the Dost mini pick up truck. The Dost is a product that was developed jointly under the Nissan-Ashok Leyland joint venture.
The mini pick up truck has been a highly successful product as Ashok Leyland has managed to sell no less than 50,000 units since the Dost’s launch. While the Dost comes in cargo and ambulance variants, a passenger van version will let Ashok Leyland challenge the Tata Magic and Mahindra Maxximo van. Here are Team ICB’s exclusive renders of the Dost passenger carrier.
The Ashok Leyland Dost passenger van will retain the Dost pick up truck’s 3 cylinder turbo diesel engine. A CNG version of the Dost passenger van will join the line up, along with the CNG powered Dost pick up. Expect 7-8 seats in the Dost passenger van, which will come with a price tag much lower than the Stile MPV. Ashok Leyland has been facing heat from investors as the company turned out a loss for last year.
In fact, one investor, who was unhappy with the low dividend issued by the company for this year, suggested that the Ashok Leyland non-executive vice chairman, Mr Seshasayee, take home a nominal 1 rupee salary like a certain N.R Narayana Murthy instead of the 3 crore rupees he takes home. So, new products like the Dost passenger van and the Stile MPV are the need of the day, to pep up things for the utility vehicle maker. In the light truck space, Ashok Leyland is putting final touches to the Partner truck. The Partner truck could be launched by the end of this year or early next year.
