Daimler Benz considering the Mini Pick Up Truck segment as a growth area of the future!
Tata Motors first began making trucks in collaboration with Daimler Benz, many decades ago. Now, Daimler Benz has entered India on its own and is all set to launch a range of heavy duty trucks mainly aimed at the tipper and trailer market. In the future though, Daimler Benz might enter the high growth mini pick up truck sector, a sector which was pioneered by Tata Motors best selling mini pick up truck, the Ace.
Incidentally, the Tata Ace spawned an all new mini pick up truck segment in India when it was launched a few years ago and ever since, the Ace has continued to be the market leader of its segment, with 1 of every 2 pick up trucks sold in India being a Tata Ace. Enthused by the Tata Ace’s mega success story, many more commercial vehicle makers like Mahindra, Piaggio, Force Motors, Hindustan Motors and Ashok Leyland have also joined the mini pick up truck brigade.
The mini pick up truck segment is growing at a high rate of over 20% each passing year. Mini pick up trucks are also being exported from India to many countries across the world as their small size and practicality make them an ideal last mile transport option for crowded places. Daimler Benz is evaluating its options in the Indian mini pick up truck market although it says that it will take nearly4-5 years for it to launch its product.
Meanwhile, here’s what Daimler India Commercial Vehicles’ Vice President(R&D), Aydogan Cakmaz has had to say about his firm’s plans for the mini pick up truck segment,
It is possible, but it should make business sense. We will undertake research and development to go for such a product. If at all we decide to enter this segment, it will take at least four to five years to do it.The segment has many players and it would be important for us that the product we offer meets our quality parameters.
