In our commercial vehicles section today we have news from Russia. The joint venture between German truck makers at Daimler and Russia’s Kamaz has produced their first product aimed primarily for the Russian market. The car branded as Kamaz was showcased at the Comtrans commercial vehicle show in Moscow. The heavy duty truck has been developed jointly by Daimler and Kamaz. Both companies also plan to collaborate to produce truck cabs.

The newly launched truck features Daimler sourced components and has been modified by Kamaz for Russian conditions. Russia is a vast country with a terrain so different that only specific type of vehicles can traverse the remotest corners of the federation. Kamaz has been making trucks since 1969 at the Naberezhnye Chelny plant in the Tatarstan region. The new Kamaz trucks will also be manufactured at this unit. Russia being the largest truck market in Europe has a huge market volume which is predicted to grow over the next decade a brisk pace.

“We’re delighted to further expand our cooperation with Kamaz. Russia remains the largest truck market in Europe, with a market volume of 79,000 units over six tons GVW last year and almost 190,000 units forecast for 2020. Together with our partner, we are on the right track to offer state-of-the-art trucks for the Russian market,” said Andreas Renschler, Daimler Board of Management Member responsible for Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses.

The new Daimler-Kamaz truck will go on sale in Russia in 2014. By the end of next year, Daimler will begin delivering cabs to Kamaz but overtime the Russian truck manufacturer will begin building truck cabs at the Chelny unit.

“The launch of another cooperative project, this time for cabs, will further strengthen the strategic partnership between Daimler Trucks and Kamaz. We’re proud to present our new Kamaz truck as early as this year. The vehicle is benefiting from the cooperation with Daimler Trucks and is optimally tailored to the needs of the Russian market,” Sergey Kogogin, Director General of Kamaz, added.
