After Volvo, Scania, the other Swedish commercial vehicles brand will soon start its operations in India. Until now, Scania has been selling mining trucks in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro since 2007. Now, the company wishes to begin full operations in the country which will comprise of assemblies of trucks and buses at a brand new facility in Bengaluru.

Scania has setup an Indian arm that will take care of its operations in the subcontinent. Scania Commercial Vehicles India Pvt Ltd. has thus been setup under which the commercial vehicle maker will operate in India. Scania wishes to launch heavy haulage trucks and intercity buses in India by next year.

“We will set up a regional product centre at Bangalore for assembling heavy haulage trucks and city and inter-city luxury buses,” said Henrik Fagrenius, managing director, Scania Commercial Vehicles India.

The brand new assembly unit in Bengaluru will be up and running in a years time according to Fagrenius. The company aims to sell 2000 units of its heavy duty trucks and 1000 units of inter-city luxury coaches that will rival the Volvo B9R and the latest Mercedes Benz products over a period of five years.

“We are looking at selling 2,000 trucks and 1,000 buses and 1,500 engines for industrial and marine applications in India over the next five years.”

At present the company has not decided upon its portfolio for India. Scania trucks come in different engine sizes depending upon their application. Heavy duty trucks are available from 220-730 bhp. L&T has been the distribution partner of the Swedish auto giant since 2007 although, the company has not decided upon the future of this partnership.

“We have not closed any options on that. L&T will continue to play an important role in relation to Scania’s sales and service in the Indian construction equipment market.

Our own presence in the country will also strengthen L&T’s position, since the company’s Scania customers will benefit from a larger range of models, shorter delivery times and higher service availability,” Fagrenius said.
