There’s nothing really, that smooth talk and a steady nerve cannot achieve. It all began with Team ICB heading out for a late dinner on Friday night while a Tata Magic Iris CNG, with nary any camouflage was found doing the testing rounds on the NH4 crisscrossing Pune.

Out came our cameras and even as we were about to shutter away to glory, the driver got smart and slowed down dramatically. Now, NH4 being a very busy highway with plenty of truck traffic to boot at night, we couldn’t do much than stop and wait for the Tata Magic Iris to come along.

The driver spotted us yet again and this time, turned scarlet and stopped to give us a piece of his mind. Some oily talk to distract the driver, we managed to get a few nice spy shots of the Magic Iris CNG even as the driver now visibly calmed down, blurted out everything he knew about the Magic Iris CNG.

The Tata Magic Iris is a people mover that Tata Motors hopes will replace the Autorickshaws in the city and along with that, be a safer, more comfortable and a frugaler option to the ubiquitous auto rickshaw. While the Magic Iris has been launched in select parts of the country, it seems that Tata Motors continues to test the Magic Iris to refine it further along with adding a CNG option to it.

To do all this and then some more, the Magic Iris comes with an indirect injection 611cc water cooled diesel engine that pumps out about 11 Bhp. The Iris, mated to a 4 speed manual gearbox tops out at under 60 Kph and can seat four adults apart from the driver himself which is terrific when compared to the autorickshaw on which three passengers are tight affairs.

The Tata Magic Iris, according to the test driver, will deliver about 25 kilometers per liter of diesel, which is in the same ballpark as autorickshaws, while he declined to talk about the mileage that the Iris will deliver on CNG. Also, the interiors looks much better finished than your average autorickshaw not to mention the fact that the dashboard layout looked neat and tidy.

Watch out for the Tata Magic Iris CNG being launched sometime in the future at a price slightly more than the diesel version.
