Volvo 7700 Diesel-Electric Hybrid City Bus to hit Bangalore roads soon!
Very soon, Bangalore’s roads will have a low emission diesel-electric hybrid bus to ferry passengers. Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation(BMTC), is all set to induct an experimental fleet of Volvo 7700 Diesel-Electric Hybrid city buses which will be run as a part of a two month trail. If the trial proves to be successful, BMTC plans to induct more such buses for Bangalore. Volvo India showcased the 7700 Diesel-Electric Hybrid City Bus at the recently concluded 2012 Indian Auto Expo. The Volvo 7700 Hybrid bus, like all Volvo city buses will come with a low floor design for easy ingress and egress.
Volvo 7700 Diesel-Electric Hybrid City Bus
The Volvo 7700 Hybrid bus is expected to go on field trials in Bangalore over the next few weeks. Volvo claims a whopping 35% reduction in fuel consumption and a considerable 40%-50% cut in tail pipe emissions. The Volvo 7700 hybrid bus will feature a 5 Liter MD5, four cylinder turbocharged, intercooled diesel engine producing 210 Bhp of peak power and 800 Nm of peak torque. This engine will be mated to an electric motor which will run on lithium ion batteries. The Volvo 7700′s diesel engine will shut off at traffic signals or whenever the bus is stationary for more than a few seconds and the electric motor will kick in.
The electric motor will power the bus for speeds of up to 20 Kph, after which the diesel engine will take over. The Volvo 7700 is a parallel hybrid and will thus charge the electric motor’s lithium ion battery stack through the diesel engine’s alternator, thus not constantly replenishing the battery stack. Regenerative braking will also be used to recharge the Lithium Ion battery stack. The 7700 can be operated in three modes, all electric, diesel and diesel-electric. For the Indian market, Volvo will offer a 105 seater(Both sitting and standing) version of the 7700 Hybrid Bus.

I am sure the Tata Motors bus will be underpowered, the way there current set of AC buses, which were introduced to compete with the Volvo’s running in Bangalore.
You can figure out that it is underpowered the way the Tata’ bus screams it is as if trying to say “Mujhe aur atyachar mat karo, main aur nahi pull kar sakta”
