The 2012 Renault Twizy and why India could do very well with such stuff!

More often than not, people in India often prefer to commute on their motorcycles and scooters even as their cars get reduced to weekend modes of transport with their families. The prime reason for this is the chaotic traffic maelstrom of Indian cities which almost doubles the time required to go from point A to B in a car, as opposed to that on a motorcycle or a scooter. Fuel efficiency is another big aspect with cars falling way short of two wheelers. But many a time, the comfort and safety of a cage along with it’s all weather usability is sorely missed on a motorcycle. Renault with the Twizy aims to fill just this gap between cars and motorcycles.

Designed to offer the comfort and the safety of a car while remaining as nimble and as frugal as a scooter, the two seater Twizy EV is Renault’s solution of a handy urban runabout. The driver and the passenger sit one behind the other on the Twizy which has a canopy like the erstwhile BMW C1 to offer a modicum of protection from the elements while being narrow enough to squeeze through traffic gaps that a conventional car cannot even dream of.

The 450 kilogram Twizy’s electric motor is capable of churning about 20 Bhp which is more than enough for most trafficated cities and runs on rechargeable lithium ion batteries which endown the Twizy with a range in excess of 100 kilometers. The Twizy’s battery stack can be recharged in three and a half hours while the runabout also features a 31 liter luggage cubby hole beneath the rear seat. By Indian standards though, the Twizy’s price is a highish INR 4,25,000 but if Renault can come up with something at half that price, it could definitely find more than a few eager buyers in India. What say, Renault?

As reader Shrawan, quite rightly mentioned, first Renault must have a good dealer ship in India.
Coming to twiggy, there are a few more cars like this available in the west, but which is not possible to bring to India because of the high costs and duties.Unless and otherwise the GOI, brings some laws, and slashes the E.D. and sales tax for the battery operated cars, all this will be a pipe dream.
