OMG! The 192 PS Volkswagen Polo GTI seems to be indeed getting ready for launch in India, as these spy shots, courtesy of ardent ICB reader Mr. Abhijeet Mukherjee, indicate that the German automaker could have started conducting market study and performing real road tests of the ultra-performance variant on our soil.
Volkswagen Polo GTI India launch was hinted by media reports emanated at the very beginning of this calendar year.
Before getting to what’s under the hood, lets talk why the GTI should be launched in India. Polo GTI would be a great opportunity for Volkswagen India to elevate the brand status and connect better with car & racing enthusiasts in the country. They have being doing just that, by launching Polo GT TSI and GT TDI, and by hosting Polo Cup and Vento Cup One-Make Championship races. To go above and beyond, the baton from the 105 hp Polo GT was expected to be grabbed by either 150 hp Polo GT or by 192 hp Polo GTI, and it seems we have the latter, rather the hottest candidate, as the one that could hit showrooms within a few months’ time.
Volkswagen Golf GT was also expected to be brought to India, to be positioned immediately above the current Polo GT, but Polo GTI seems to be a better option as this would be more affordable for the customers than the former.
The latest iteration of Polo GTI was unveiled at 2014 Paris Motor Show.
While the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is powered by 1.2 litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine doing duty in automatic variants of Vento sedan too, that produces 105 PS max power @ 5,000 rpm and 175 Nm peak torque @ 1,500 rpm, upcoming VW Polo GTI will be powered by 1.8 litre TSI petrol engine, probably in the same 192 PS and 320 Nm tune.
Volkswagen India may have decided it’s time to bring in the GTI, based on favourable response for the GT TSI and TDI models in the country.
This 1.8 TSI engine is seen aboard Skoda Octavia in lower state of power & torque output, and in Skoda Superb too in an even lower tune. There is good chance the upcoming VW Polo GTI in India could share the same (lower) state of tune as one of these sedans, instead of the 189 bhp setting in international markets. Mated to this engine inside VW Polo GTI, is the acclaimed 7-speed DSG unit, that helps this hot hatch achieve 0-100 kmph acceleration in just 6.7 seconds. Top speed is rated internationally at 236 kmph. Manual variant with 6-speed stick shift could be offered in India, but it is highly unlikely.
Volkswagen Polo GTI will not be a volume oriented product, it will be a brand shaping tool backed by a niche audience base.
Coming to the question of price, as that is where it all boils down, Volkswagen Polo GTI India price is expected to fall in the vicinity of Rs. 17 lakhs, even if the model is partly assembled at the local facility in Chakan, near Pune.

The red stripe that extends from lower half of front grille to the headlamp clusters, invigorates the front fascia of Polo GTI, on top of the sporty scent thrown by the lower air dam’s framework.
Twin exhaust, subtle black cladding and roof lip spoiler are carefully crafted to understate the car’s majesty in terms of capability or performance, which makes the car arguably graceful.
Very subtle red detailing on the car’s interior, especially around centre console, AC vents, door panels and seat upholstery would be a major welcome by enthusiasts.
