200cc Honda motorcycle in the offing?

Hero Honda and Honda have somehow managed to keep their successful alliance going in spite of Honda venturing into the 100cc bread and butter segment with the CB Twister.

Apart from the Twister, all of Honda’s motorcycles like the CB Shine, the CB Stunner and the CB Unicorn directly take on market leader Hero Honda’s offerings.

In spite of this fierce competition, Hero Honda and Honda have somehow managed to their long standing relationship by periodic meetings with each other. In one such periodic meeting, the Honda Scooters and Motorcycles India president and CEO, Shinji Aoyoma was caught saying this,

We are studying the possibility of another product in the range of Karizma.

Now, that will come as a major dampener to a lot of motorcycle enthusiasts who were for long, hoping for a 250cc motorcycle from Honda.

We did a quick analysis of Honda’s global portfolio in the 200cc motorcycle space and we didn’t find many options that fit this segment, except the CRF230 whose engine, incidentally is being used in the Hero Honda Karizma. So, Honda Scooters and Motorcycles India might develop an all new 200cc motorcycle or go one segment higher for a 250cc engined motorcycle.

The latter looks more likely as the Honda has plenty of single and multi cylinder 250cc engines which it could readily use for a premium Indian Honda 250. This also makes sense as the Indian premium motorcycle market is rapidly evolving with the long starved-for-performance motorcycle buyers eagerly waiting to lap up 250cc+ motorcycles. Are you listening, Honda?
