Altius Scimitar 670cc dual purpose diesel motorcycle launch in cold storage?
Altius Engineering, a firm that has Ex-Tata Motors and Hyundai head honcho BVR Subbu helming affairs made quite a splash last year when it announced big plans of entering the Indian market with a motorcycle that had all the trappings of being the definitive wet dream of Indian touring enthusiasts,. Yes, we’re talking about the Altius Scimitar 670 dual purpose motorcycle. Its been almost a year since this motorcycle whetted the appetites of Indian motorcycle touring enthusiasts but nothing’s been heard from Altius Engineering ever since. Emails enquiring about the status of the Scimitar to the company have bounced back while the website doesn’t feature a number we could dial, in an ominous sign of what might be foreboding.
We’re afraid that the Scimitar 670 , like many motorcycles that held much promise, only to never see the light of the day, could turn out to be yet another to add to those numbers. A shame really, for the 670cc diesel engined motorcycle is just what the doctor ordered for when it comes to cross country riding. A 33 Bhp engine producing a prodigious 53 Nm of peak twist meant that the Scimitar has more than enough poke to be at home in almost every terrain that the Indian landscape can throw at it. The Scimitar was developed by HDT corporation of the United States, as a motorcycle for the US Army’s personal mobility with toughness and fuel economy being prime objectives.
In line with that, the diesel engined motorcycle is also said to be capable of running on kerosene and jet fuel, thus being a real omnivore to suit all sorts of conditions across the world. A tough-as-nails chassis derived from the legendary Kawasaki KLR 650 forms the base of the Scimitar 670, another facet that had Indian motorcycle touring enthusiasts salivating at. The much touted Auto Expo came and went and much to our despair, the Altius Scimitar 670 was nowhere to be found. If this motorcycle doesn’t see the light in the coming months, expect it to go into the annals of Indian motorcycling history of yet another promise that was never kept.
