Bajaj Auto could come up with a 100cc Boxer BM100 motorcycle, in an ICB Exclusive!

Our roving eye in the sky, EarthFusion, tells us that the second largest two wheeler maker in India, Bajaj Auto, is testing a 100cc version of the recently relaunched Bajaj Boxer. Currently, Bajaj sells the Boxer BM150 with a 150cc four stroke engine, which is essentially a single spark, high torque version of the Bajaj Discover’s 150cc DTSi engine. The Bajaj Boxer BM150 has been a tepid seller for Bajaj Auto, with the brand going all out to hard sell the motorcycle aimed squarely at the rural market through a road show highlighting the rugged features of this motorcycle.

EarthFusion spotted a Boxer BM100 test motorcycle which clearly had the decals sporting the BM100 badging. Although we do not have images to show for the moment as the test motorcycle disappeared quickly into the factory, this sighting  indicates that Bajaj Auto could be working on a 100cc variant of the Bajaj Boxer, as a cut price variant that will deliver a much higher mileage than the BM150, while retaining the traditional strengths of ruggedness, cheap spares and frugality, three factors that have made the Boxer a highly successful brand for Bajaj, a brand that resuscitated the once struggling scooter maker. Also, such a motorcycle, if not being readied up for an Indian launch, could be bound for the international markets like Africa and South America.

A big reason for Bajaj Auto to possibly come up with a 100cc Boxer might be because, fuel economy is a very high priority that the rural motorcycle buyer accords to entry level motorcycles. It is this reason that the Splendors and Passions of this world continue to sell like hot cakes in India’s hinterland. This is also perhaps why the Boxer BM150 is struggling to sell well as the more powerful engine cannot match the 100cc motorcycle in terms of fuel economy. Meanwhile, we’ll try our best to snag images of the on-test Bajaj BM100 and if indeed Bajaj Auto launches this motorcycle in India, you know where you read about it first.
