Official: Avenger 200′s production stopped; Bajaj Avenger 220 on!
Bajaj Avenger 200 DTS-i
Bajaj Auto gave India and Indian bikers, the very first true blue cruiser in the form of the then pricey, Kawasaki Eliminator 175. Soon after, Bajaj dumped the bomb proof Kawasaki 175cc engine to instead use the Bajaj Pulsar’s 180cc mill. While this resulted in power delivery that was much more peakier than the torquey Kawasaki four stroke 175cc engine, it also resulted in the price going radically southwards due to Bajaj Auto localizing most parts. So, India’s first cruiser became one of India’s most value for money cruiser and the Avenger 180 started flying out of showroom shelves.
To continue in the tradition of constantly(irritatingly?) upgrading it’s products, Bajaj Auto then dumped the Avenger 180 for the Avenger 200 Oil Cooled as it had a 200cc oil cooled readily available in the Pulsar 200 DTS-i. So, that has been the story of the Bajaj Avenger so far. Days ago, a forumer on Xbhp reported that Bajaj Auto is all set to relaunch the Avenger with a 220cc and that the Avenger 200′s production had been stopped. We called up a few of Bajaj’s dealers who also confirmed that bookings for the Avenger 200 would not be taken henceforth while they declined to say whether the Avenger 220 was indeed in the pipeline.
We however, think that the Avenger 220 has a strong possibility of seeing a launch shortly as Bajaj aims to streamline it’s production line by using the same engines across different platforms. This, as the Bajaj Pulsar 200 DTS-i has for long been discontinued and since the Avenger 200 also has now bitten the dust, a 220cc engine for the Avenger seems very likely if Bajaj Auto wants to stay in this small but significant cruiser segment, which could see plenty of action going forward, as more and more Indians take to leisure motorcycling. The Bajaj Avenger 220, like the Pulsar 220 DTS-i, could cost just a couple of grand more than the outgoing model and the bigger engine could result in the Bajaj Avenger 220 DTS-i outperforming the Royal Enfield Thunderbird Twinspark when it comes to the speed and acceleration stakes.
Update: We contacted Bajaj Auto and here’s what Tejaswini, a spokesperson of Bajaj Auto, had to say about the Avenger 220.
The Avenger 220 is indeed coming shortly. The Avenger production has not been stopped per se but the Avenger’s 200cc engine has been upgraded to 220cc. This engine is similar to the one on Bajaj Pulsar 220.
When we queried her about whether the Avenger 220 would come with fuel injection, she replied in the negative. Also, the prices will be slightly more than the Avenger 200 and the hike would be a reasonable one. Shortly, Bajaj dealers will start accepting bookings for the Avenger 220.
As always, IndianCarsBikes takes immense pride in bringing you the latest buzz from the Indian auto hemisphere much before anyone else on the blogosphere.
