It is a proud moment for Hero Motors and India as BMW bikes worldwide will now be fitted with gearboxes with a ‘Made in India’ tag. Hero Motors of India has bagged a contract which makes the company the only supplier of gearboxes for all models of BMW bikes in India as well as all over the world.
Pankaj Munjal, managing director, Hero Motors, said, “We have developed the gearbox ourselves. Usually, components such as engines and transmissions are made by the company itself, as they involve advanced technology. We have achieved the expertise. BMW Motorrad will source gearboxes from us for products it sells globally.”
“That Europe is the best place for sourcing automobile components is not necessarily correct. The landscape is changing. Our transmission business, for one, has been growing over 70 per cent a year for the last few years” he added.
The agreement that was finalized on Tuesday will be for five to eight years depending upon transmissions sourced for different products by BMW Motorrad. BMW are now available in select cities across India. The bikes are being imported by two BMW dealers directly without any interference by BMW Motorrad themselves.
The prices of the BMW bikes in India range from Rs 18 lakh and Rs 25 lakh. The bikes are imported by Navnit Motors and Deutsche Motoren. Both the dealerships are solely responsible for servicing the bike as well.
