2011 BMW S1000RR and 2011 BMW R1200GS obscenely priced in India: Team ICB asks Why!
2011 BMW S1000RR Superbike
Navnit Motors sells BMW cars in Bangalore and Bombay. For the past month or so, the dealer has been displaying the 2011 BMW S1000RR and is also accepting bookings for the superbike along with the 2011 BMW R1200GS. So far, so good. But wait till you hear this. The dealer is charging a sum of INR 23 lakhs for the motorcycle, which frankly speaking is obscene with a capital O.
How else can you explain a motorcycle, that costs around $14,000 in the US of A, which literally translates into about 6.2 Lakhs in Indian rupees. Now, the Yamaha R1 also sells for about $13,600 in the US of A, and retails in India for more than double that at INR 13 Lakhs.

Now, that is quite understandable considering the fact that the high Indian CBU duty structure make the 800cc plus motorcycles almost double expensive than their counterparts abroad. So, applying the same analogy, the BMW S1000RR in India, even if bought through the CBU route should not cost more than INR 13-14 Lakhs.
But, here we are, with a BMW dealer in India charging almost 10 Lakhs extra. Shockingly, this huge discrepancy in pricing doesn’t end here. The other BMW motorcycle that the dealer is selling, the 2011 BMW R1200GS is going for a whopping INR 34 Lakhs. Heck even the top end Ducatis, considered to be the Ferraris of the motorcycling world, don’t sell for that much.

And what does the BMW R1200GS cost in Uncle Sam country: $17,000. This was it, and we got in touch with the folks at BMW India seeking an answer as to why, the dealer was charging such a huge premium, which almost looks like total fleecing of the Indian customer.
In reply to our query, BMW India told us that they had absolutely nothing to do with the BMW motorcycles imported into India by Navnit Motors and Deutsche Motors, who incidentally are authorized BMW India car dealers. According to a top BMW India official, who spoke to Team ICB, these dealerships are independently importing the motorcycles straight from Germany.

And thus, BMW India has no role in either the pricing, or the after sales support of these motorcycles. So it is very evident that BMW India has no part to play in the pricing or the import of these obscenely priced motorcycles. That said, we’re pretty miffed that a BMW dealer is overcharging the Indian motorcycling enthusiast many times over for a motorcycle, that can be legally imported into the country for a far lesser price. At least to us, these obscene prices seems like sheer daylight robbery. What do you think?
