Royal Enfield’s Cafe Racer version of the Classic UCE EFI500 showcased at the Auto Expo 2010
Royal Enfield unveiled their new “Cafe racer concept motorcycle” at the 10th Auto Expo in New Delhi. This concept motorcycle, based on the Classic UCE EFI500 Model, is being developed primarily for the international market.
Royal Enfield Cafe Racer Bike Features:
This motorcycle concept packs in a host of racy features like:
- “Bump Stop” Seat
- Chopped mudguard
- Clip-on bars
- A new twin pod instrument cluster
- Racing Number Plates on sides
- Megaphone muffler
- Retro tail lamp cluster
The Bike is expected to be launched for the international market somewhere in the year 2012. This will then be followed by an Indian Launch later. In India, the Royal Enfield Cafe Racer is expected to sell for about INR 170,ooo when it does get launched sometime after 2012. The engine option will probably be the UCE500 engine currently doing duty in the Classic 500 or might even see a power bump in line with the racy theme of the Cafe Racer.
Here’s what R L Ravichandran, the CEO of Royal Enfield had to say about the Cafe Racer “We expect to unveil this Cafe Racer brand of bikes for the international market by 2012”
For now, you can drool over the pics that we’ve snapped up for you straight from the 2010 Indian Auto Expo.

The Bike is expected to be launched for the international market somewhere in the year 2012?!?!
The bike is already available overseas and is hundred times better than what they showcased at the Auto Expo.
I must admit to being interested in the Indian Enfield’s for the first time.
I have some experience with an earlier model, about 10 years ago, via an acquaintance who, unfortunately, bought one a dealer had imported for evaluation. It basically needed a total strip, various parts replaced with REAL stuff, and a lot of hand-work before reassembling. It was still never reliable-enough for long trips and was only being used for sunny Sundays locally (near a bus-route home!) It seems riders in India just potter slowly around locally, and thus have never noticed the bike couldn’t be ridden hard. Hard meaning being cruised at 70mph on our much faster roads.
However, a lot has happened since the new man in GB has taken over, he seeing the problem and doing something about it.
The new Enfield’s are, in principle, completely new bikes, made in a modern factory with new semi and automatic machine tools. We can only hope the materials and surface finishes are improved too, it has been said this is the case. We must also hope the chrome and paint are better, too. It rains up here!
But enough doom and gloom. I have been following the Enfield story as best can and I do think the bikes are now good enough for the evil rep the original bikes garnered to no longer be applicable. Indeed, I think the Indians can feel quiet proud of their achievements.
Shame I’m getting a trifle old and creaky to ride bikes!
But, a win on the lottery just might overcome that, I am sorely tempted!
Sven,
Tempted, a lot of folks are as more and more young Indians seem to be taking to the the newer crop of reliable, fuel efficient Enfields. So much so, that the factory is struggling with 6 month long waiting periods for the UCE bullets. By the looks of it, you might just bite the bullet pretty soon. ;-)
Cheers,
Jay
