The iconic MAX-R brand gets reincarnated as the TVS MAX-4R
TVS MAX-4R
With the last of the Indian two stroke motorcycle brigade dying when the legendary TVS Max 100R bit the dust sometime ago, we shed a couple of tears in memory of the robust 100cc commuter. Fast forward a couple of months and here we have it, the resurrection of the TVS MAX 100R in four stroke guise, the TVS MAX-4R. Predictably, TVS has foraged it’s parts bin and has used the Star City’s bomb proof 110cc engine that puts out a very respectable 8 Bhp of power and 8.3 Nm of torque.
This engine will be mated to the tried and tested all down 4 speed gearbox for power transmission to the rear wheel. Unlike in the latest motorcycle from TVS’s stable, the TVS Jive, the Max-4R will make do with a clutch to enable gear shifting. This, as folks in the rural belts might not really like the idea of a clutchless gear shifting along with the loss in economy that a rotary geared system brings to the equation. So, in an demographic where maximum economy dictates everything, TVS has safely opted for the tried and tested manual clutch system.
The rest of the motorcycle is a major departure from the TVS Star City motorcycles in the looks department as cost cutting has resulted in a stripped out version shorn of all the unnecessary gloss. Devoid of the bikini headlamp fairing, alloy wheels and other bells and whistles, the TVS MAX-4R is a basic yet rugged looking motorcycle particularly designed to cope with the rigors that the unforgiving rural terrain will throw at it in good measure. To do just this, you get quad shock absorbers at the rear in addition to the 130mm telescopic front forks.
The quad shocks along with the removable rear seat which then becomes a luggage rack, is mainly intended to facilitate load carrying. Going by the likes of the heavy loads that our rural brethren use to carry, the TVS MAX-4R is all set to be the latest of the load luggers in the hinterlands. To succeed, the motorcycle needs more than thoughtful and robust new features. It also needs a killer price tag and TVS Motors has done just that, and priced the TVS MAX-4R at just under INR 40,000 on-road Chennai.
