TVS Motors showcased a 125cc, four stroke commuter motorcycle, in the form of the Radeon concept, at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo. This very motorcycle could be launched, albeit with a new name. Phoenix is what TVS Motors is expected to christen the 125cc executive commuter motorcycle as, with the launch expected to happen during the upcoming festive season of Dusshera-Diwali. Currently, TVS Motors has a solitary offering in the 125cc segment in the form of the Flame 125. The addition of another model in the 125cc segment could be a strategy to offer the buyer more choice at a different price point.

By the looks of it, the Phoenix 125 commuter motorcycle could be priced lower than the Flame 125, which comes with a four stroke engine with a three valve head. The 125cc, four stroke single cylinder engine could produce a peak power of 10.5 PS and a peak torque of 10 Nm, figures that are identical to the Flame’s output. The engine is expected to be borrowed from the Flame and this explains the power and torque figures. Transmission could be a four speed unit. Given that the Phoenix 125 commuter motorcycle will take on the likes of the Bajaj Discover and the Honda Shine, an electric start and a front disc brake is expected to be offered as standard.
TVS Motors has been steadily losing share in the entry level commuter motorcycle space with Honda’s latest offering, the Dream Yuga 110, nibbling away at market share that the likes of TVS Motors and Bajaj Auto once enjoyed. So, more motorcycles in the commuter space is the need of the hour for TVS Motors if it hopes to hold on to its market share. Therefore, the Phoenix 125 will be a very important product for the Hosur based two and three wheeler maker. Expect competitive pricing for the 2012 Phoenix 125, in line with what the competition has priced similar products at.
Apart from the launch of the 125cc motorcycle, TVS Motors is expected to launch a 125cc automatic scooter, as its latest offering in the high growth segment, which has been a lucrative area for TVS with the Wego 110 being a strong seller. Apart from the new 125cc scooter, TVS also has plans of test launching a hybrid scooter called the Qube. Notably, TVS Motors has been steadily gaining market share in the automatic scooter segment even as it is losing share in the motorcycle segment.
