TVS Phoenix 125 commuter motorcycle to be launched on 28th September, 2012!

TVS Motors Limited will launch its second product of the year, the Phoenix 125cc commuter motorcycle, on the 28th of September 2012. The first has been the refreshed 2012 Apache, which was got a mixed response from buyers, with some loving it while many others loathed the new styling, which looked like TVS trying too hard to ape the best selling Bajaj Pulsar. The Phoenix will be TVS Motors’ second 125cc offering for the Indian commuter motorcycle segment, after the Flame SR125, a motorcycle that had been embattled with Bajaj over the twin spark dispute in court, which TVS Motors eventually won.

The Phoenix is expected to retain the 125cc, single cylinder engine of the Flame, in single spark guise, with a three valve head. This engine could pump our 10.5 Bhp of peak power and 10 Nm of peak torque.  Transmission will be by means of a four speed manual gearbox. The Phoenix looks quite similar to TVS Motors’ Star City range of 110cc commuter motorcycles, in terms of external styling. While contemporary looking, the Phoenix is nothing out of the ordinary, and predictably so given that the commuter motorcycle segment buyers look for solid engineering, bomb proof reliability and good fuel economy than racy looks alone.

The Phoenix will get a petal disc brake and electric start as options while the analog-digital instrumentation cluster will be standard on all variants. Suspension set up is conventional, with telescopic front forks and twin shock absorbers at the rear.  The rear shock absorbers however, come with dual spring shock absorbers for better ride comfort. Incidentally, this technology was first seen on the Bajaj Platina commuter motorcycle, which came with SNS(Spring inside spring) rear suspension. Back then, Bajaj claimed that the SNS suspension of the Platina was a world first.

Notably, the Bajaj Discover ST125 is the only motorcycle to break away from tradition to offer a monoshock rear in the 125cc segment, along with a four valve engine head. Coming back to the TVS Phoenix 125, expect the motorcycle to be priced below the Flame SR125, as TVS Motors’ challenger to the likes of the Honda Shine 125 and the Bajaj Discover 125 DTSi. In the next 15 months, TVS Motors will launch three new products in the form of a new 125cc automatic scooter, the TVS Qube hybrid scooter and an all new TVS Victor commuter motorcycle.
