2011 FIA Formula 1 regulations in a nut shell

Formula 1′s governing body, the FIA has voted in favor of a list of new rules for the 2011 season of the Formula 1 World Championship. Last year, amidst all the chaos, all the teams decided to drop the KERS systems some in order to save weight and a few others, simply because they couldn’t afford it. Then there were the so called F-Ducts, which gave a driver an upper hand while attempting to overtake. The F-Ducts were designed to stall the air flowing over the rear wing thus reducing downforce and in turn increasing the top speed. Again some of the top teams opted for this technology but dumped it eventually except for McLaren. Double diffusers and F-Ducts have been banned. FIA in the newly-published 2011 regulations, following last week’s World Motor Sport Council meeting, has decided upon the following:
- Adjustable rear wings: Drivers will be able to adjust the rear wings from their cockpits. This facility will be governed by electronics and the drivers will be able to use these only at certain times and on specific sections of track.
- KERS : The Kinetic Energy Regeneration System has been legalized for the 2011 season. However, teams will be able to decide for themselves if they wish to run the system as it is not compulsory. The KERS is heavy and in order to give the teams flexibility in terms of weight distribution, the FIA has decided to raise the minimum car weight by 20kg to 640kg.
- Sporting Regulations: A curfew will be imposed on team personnel associated with the operations of the car from midnight to 6am when practice is scheduled to start at 10am, or 1am to 7am if practice is scheduled to start at 11am. Gearboxes will now have to last for five races rather than four.
- Tyres: Drivers will receive three sets of dry weather Pirelli tyres to use in P1 and P2 and will have to return one set after each session. Eight sets will then be at their disposal for the rest of the race weekend, although one set of each specification must be handed back before qualifying. Secondly, If a driver fails to use both specifications of dry weather tyres during a race, they will be excluded from the results. If a race is suspended and can’t be restarted, and a driver has failed to use both sets of tyres, 30 seconds will be added to the driver’s race time.
- 107 Percent rule: A driver must set a time within 107 percent of the fastest time in order to qualify for the race.
