Karun Chandhok was signed by the Lotus F1 team as their reserve driver yesterday. Chandhok will take part in Friday practices and help the engineers setup the car for the race. He seems to be aiming for a race seat at Lotus F1 during the Indian GP though.

According to the Deccan Herald, “Heikki and Jarno are the main drivers and the team has its own plans,” said the 27-year old Indian racer. “I might, I might not, only time will tell.”

Karun’s father, Vicky Chandhok was spotted by the media before the deal with Lotus F1 was signed said, (Karun) “wants to get a (reserve) slot with the idea that he gets to race at the Indian grand prix”, which is scheduled for October.

India will be hosting its very first Formula 1 race at the brand new circuit near New Delhi. An Indian driver on the  starting grid could make a huge difference in terms of enthusiasm at the race track in October which could benefit both the organizers and the team.
