Hispania Racing F1 Team: Who’s the weak Link in HRT?

HRT Team Spain 2010

HRT Team Spain 2010

We all liked the Super Aguri F1 team because they were a fun team to watch with Takuma Sato and his compatriot Yamamoto. It was a nice small Jap team fighting the odds and we all like underdogs. We liked them even more when they stole a few points and made life difficult for a few other teams.

HRT also are underdogs. Probably the underdogs of the underdogs revelling at the bottom of the F1 grid and we don’t like that. (I know the guys at HRT work harder than the guys at Ferrari, and I respect that). But let’s face it, HRT are severely cash strapped and it’s shocking that two of the world largest emerging economies, Brazil and India are unable to help this team and are under pressure from the Japs. Why am I discussing economics? Cos news is out that Sakon Yamomoto, who surprisingly replaced Bruno Senna at Silverstone and continued to take the seat in Germany, Hungary and Belgium as well from Karun Chandhok, will be in the racing seat with HRT all season.

While this news is no shocker, question is who is the weakest link in the HRT quarters? Will it be Bruno or Karun to take the sack? Well, I certainly for one hope it is Karun. Don’t pull your guns out and come after me yet – I believe Karun’s move into F1 was untimely and definitely not the best with HRT. While he has been better than Bruno in flashes, and has gained loads of experience with HRT – I think he will agree that when he takes the wheels of even a Force India, he will feel a world of difference in the cars!

Karun Chandhok is a better talent, he’s younger and he just needs the miles to back him. I truly believe he will be the first Indian to take points in a F1 race (by actually racing, I mean). All he needs is a stint as a test driver in a Mid Table team, like Force India –  and I’m sure he’ll have chances to go places with better offers. And more importantly, he can take a good chunk of $$$ from HRT as a severance package and invest in a better team as well! How that sound eh? Guys at Force India, if you reading this – give the guy a try – what say?

On that note, I wish Karun luck in Korea in the RBR show car – he will have the distinction of having the fastest lap in Korea (for now)!
