Lewis Hamilton wins 2010 F1 Belgian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton won an incident-packed Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, capitalizing on a poor start from Mark Webber to take the lead into the first corner and keeping it till the end of the race. Webber recovered superbly to take second, although he lost his championship lead to Hamilton, with Robert Kubica in the much-improved Renault in third.

During the 44-lap race the weather was the key factor, and the rains which started during the 35th lap caused a series of crashes and spins and a safety-car period, all of which contributed to a dramatic finale to the grand prix.

Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button – Both had a forgettable day. Button’s race ended when Vettel made a silly mistake, over corrected and slammed into the McLaren side damaging the car’s radiator. Vettel was able to rejoin but the damage to Button’s car was heavy and forced him out of the race. The collision resulted in a drive-through penalty for Vettel. But the German’s bad day didn’t end there, he then suffered a puncture when he clipped Tonio Liuzzi’s Force India as well as a pit-lane touching of wheels with Fernando Alonso.

Massa had a comparatively better race than his team mate and finished in fourth place, running just off the pace of the front runners. Alonso’s Ferrari was hit at the chicane on the first lap by Rubens Barrichello, sending the Spaniard into the pits for repairs and the Brazilian into an exit from his 300th Grand Prix. Later, Alonso spun exiting Les Combes and had to abandon his damaged car right in the middle of the track. The incident triggered second safety car period for the officials to safely retrieve the Ferrari from the track.

Adrian Sutil showed the improvements made by Force India to secure fifth place. Schumacher ran a great race and got as high as fifth from 21st, despite clipping team-mate Nico Rosberg at one point, but Rosberg had the last laugh when he out muscled the renowned rain specialist three laps from the end putting both the Mercedes in point scoring position.

I really think Sebastian Vettel is not ready to become a world champion just yet. If he was a bit more experienced and probably calmer on race days, he would have converted more pole positions to wins. Oh, well, may be next year!
