Mitsubishi interested in Formula 1 if it goes ‘Electric’
FIA President Jean Todt has proposed an electric series in Formula 1. The series will be held along side the current F1 championship but, will feature all electric cars unlike the present V8 gas-guzzlers. Mitsubishi has show interest in the series which could be introduced in the future.
However, it is still too early to say if such a racing series will ever be a reality. In fact, if manufacturers come forward to support such a series, FIA might have no issues with starting a worldwide electric car racing series. Mitsubishi is one of the leaders in future electric car technology research in the world.
“We are very interested. Our employees are saying that we should definitely do it,” Mitsubishi Motors Corp. President Osamu Masuko told Japanese media, including Kyodo News.“The development costs for electric vehicles seem much lower than for gasoline cars and it would also contribute to the technological development of cars that are already on the market,” he added.
The Mitsubishi I-MieV is a city car the company makes and is currently being sold in parts of Europe. Earlier, the company which has had been involved in the Dakar rally and WRC, withdrew from the events leading to speculations that Mitsubishi might be losing interest in motorsports. But, the automaker seems to be looking into the future for a viable option that could be safe for the planet.
