Months of negotiations and numerous meetings after, Pirelli has been finalized as the official tyre supplier of the Formula 1. The Italian tyre giant will start supplying tyres to all the teams from 2011 F1 season for three consecutive years.
Pirelli had last supplied tyres to F1 teams in 1991 and now has been chosen after Bridgestone announced its exit from the sport at the end of 2010. The decision has been pending for quite some time now and the teams had been keen to get the situation resolved as soon as possible because it has an impact on the designs of the 2011 cars.
Statement from FIA said,”Pirelli has been selected as the single tyre supplier for the FIA Formula One World Championship for a period of three years, commencing in 2011. The sole supplier will undertake to strictly respect the sporting and technical regulations implemented by the FIA.”
Many big names such as Michelin and Anglo-American firm, Avon, had also been in the bidding for the contract to supply tyres to this motorsport extravaganza.
