WTCC coming to India’s Buddh International Circuit in 2013?

The Buddh International Circuit up in the north of India has caught the attention of the motorsport fraternity already. The track hosted its first grand prix in October, 2011 and was an instant success with the drivers and the fans alike. The fast, flowing race track was a hit with Formula 1 drivers even though it did not produce a lot of overtaking, it did add to the excitement for onlookers as well as for those behind the wheel of the racing cars. The Buddh International Circuit was also voted as the best motorsports facility of 2011.

Touring car racing
The biggest motorsports even that has been organised at the race track up till now is Formula 1. Even MotoGP is considering to come to India and the efforts to bring the bike race to BIC is being led by Mahindra Racing who completed their first season in the 125 cc category this year. Now, there are reports of Touring cars coming to India. The WTCC or World Touring Car Championship which involves manufacturers like Chevrolet, Seat, Volvo, BMW etc. might race in India in 2013. Marcello Lotti, the promoter of WTCC believes that India could be added to the season.

WTCC racing coming to India
Recently, WTCC has been introduces to new markets like Morocco and Japan. United States and Argentina will also join soon. India is a huge market for cars and manufacturers like GM, Volvo and BMW who already have their operations in the country would certainly feel need to come to India to showcase their prowess with racing. WTCC would provide a good platform for such car makers for a brand building exercise which could ultimately help promote their products. Finally, India seems to have arrived on the global motorsports scene and the success of the inaugural grand prix of India and the support of the fans will certainly lure more motorsports events to the subcontinent.
