Piaggio to position the Vespa LX125 as a premium lifestyle scooter!
Piaggio showcased its first two wheeled offering for the Indian scooter market at the just-concluded 2012 Indian Auto Expo, and most visitors to the Vespa stall were raving about how gorgeous and well finished the Vespa LX125 automatic scooter looked. In keeping with the retro cool looks and the high level of fit & finish, Piaggio will position the Vespa LX125 as a lifestyle scooter, at a premium price above the rest of the automatic scooter offerings in the market. This means that the Vespa LX125 will carve out a niche for itself in India, as a lifestyle scooter bought not just for utility but as an expression of style by its owner.
Though positioned a lifestyle scooter, Piaggio appears quite optimistic about the growth potential of the Indian scooter market. This is reaffirmed by the 210 crore rupee investment it is making in Baramati, Maharashtra, in setting up a manufacturing plant that will have a capacity of churning out 150,000 scooters every year. Such is the large volumes that Piaggio is anticipating and to back it up will be a nationwide distribution network. Piaggio will open 50 dealerships by the end of this year in 35 cities and that number will go up to 150 dealerships in the next couple of years.
Depending on the success of the Vespa LX125, Piaggio also plans to bring in more of its scooter offerings to India in the coming years. Coming to its very first offering, the Vespa LX125 will be powered by a 125cc four stroke engine mated to a CVT automatic transmission. The engine will generate a peak power of 10.7 Bhp while peak torque is rated at 9.6 Nm. March or April 2012 is when Piaggio will begin selling the Vespa LX125. The price of the automatic scooter, in line with its premium positioning is expected to be around the INR 55,000 mark.
