The Indian automatic scooter segment is growing at a frenetic pace with launches happening left, right and center. TVS Motors Limited will launch not one but two scooters in 2012, one of which will be a very special model, for it will be the first hybrid scooter to be launched in the Indian scooter market. TVS will launch the Qube Hybrid automatic scooter in June 2012 as an experiment to gauge consumer interest in hybrid two wheelers in India.

TVS claims a very high fuel economy for the Qube, which at 70 Kmpl is nearly double that of what existing automatic scooters offer currently. The Qube will feature an electric motor in addition to its 100cc four stroke petrol engine. The electric motor will feature a hub mounted design to maximize space utilization. The Qube will also feature many more innovations like brake energy regeneration and start-stop system to maximize fuel economy.

The TVS Qube Hybrid scooter will use lithium ion batteries instead of the conventional lead acid batteries. The Qube will run in three modes, all electric, hybrid economy and hybrid power modes, depending on whether the rider’s need of economy or power. Only 200 examples of the Qube Hybrid Scooter will be launched in June 2012, to gauge consumer interest and the performance of this scooter in real world conditions, ahead of the commercial launch in 2013.
