TVS Motors Plans an Electric Scooter comeback!
It seems like the sops that the Indian government doled out to electric and hybrid vehicles in the 2011 Union Budget is actually working. TVS Motors, one of the few Indian mainstream two wheeler manufacturers to have kick started the Indian electric vehicle foray, is all set to make a comeback.
While TVS Motors first introduced the Scooty Teenz Electric in 2008, to a tepid demand, which then forced it to discontinue the model a year later in 2009, the budget seems to have been motivating and viable enough for it to re-enter the Indian two wheeler EV space.
So, TVS Motors is currently testing over 50 prototypes of it’s various electric models around India and shortly will launch a few of these models for the India EV market. The EVs will continue to run on lead acid batteries for now and TVS has no plans of using the more advanced and lighter lithium ion batteries as that could increase costs and make the EVs a costly proposition both for TVS and prospective electric vehicle buyers.
So, if you’re in the market for an urban runabout that costs very little to run, you might want to check out the stuff that TVS will bring out soon as the biggest thing going for TVS is it’s huge range of sales and service outlets, a point that still remains the weakness of other electric vehicle manufacturers.
