Vespa returns to India! 125 cc scooter to be launched in March 2012

Italian scooter maker, Vespa aren’t new to India. Vespas once ruled the roads along with Hamara Bajaj. It was the golden years for the iconic scooters but with time, the market for scooters shrunk until finally when the manufacturers discontinued them completely. Slowly, people started to replace their old, trusty scooters with modern, four-stroke mopeds and scooterettes. Now though, one of the iconic scooter maker is back. Vespa will launch a 125 cc scooter in March next year.

“As per our plan, we will be launching the Vespa by March next year,” Ravi Chopra, chairman and managing director, Piaggio Vehicles, told reporters.

It was in the 1950s when Vespa first arrived on the Indian two-wheeler scene. Vespa will launch a gear less 125 cc scooter in the Indian market adding to the variety of other products that are currently on offer. In the 125 cc segment, there are players like Suzuki and TVS. Honda’s Activa too has been a huge success since it was launched. The Vespa LX125 could be the product that the company might be planning to launch.

The LX125cc is a re-incarnation of a classic scooter with a modern and contemporary styling. Underneath the scooter is as modern as it can get complete with a 125cc, four stroke, CVT engine with 10.7 horsepower and 9.6 Nm of torque. The company has invested heavily in its manufacturing unit in Maharashtra that has an annual capacity of 150,000 units. The bike maker also plans to double the capacity of the plant by 2013.

“The capacity of the plant would be 150,000 units and would be expanded to three lakh units per annum by mid-2013,” Chopra said.
