Yamaha India’s Scripting a Scooter Story: Yamaha BW125 to spearhead Scooter ops
I happened to live in Pune, the Oxford of the east and Motown combined, for a brief while last year. What caught my attention or should I call it fantasy while living there, was the fact that old Bajaj Scooters that would have otherwise fetched under INR 3,000, being given a nice retro two tone paint job and then some other nifty looking mods like a single flat seat and the works.
Plenty of students used to scoot across Pune in such scooters which while looking gorgeously retro also managed to be an dirt cheap of getting across an otherwise expensive-to-commute city. I even made up my mind to buy and old scooter and give it my very own touch but before I could actually translate this fantasy to reality, I had to move back to home base Bangalore. Back here, while I still nurse the desire of building my very own funky retro scoot, here’s something interesting that has turned up.
Yamaha Motor India has been hinting about foraying into the lucrative and growing Indian auto scooter market and here’s a sneak peek on what they might launch in the near future. No, we aren’t talking dirt cheap here, but funky and chic. Yamaha Motor India is contemplating the launch of the ultra chic looking BW125 Power Scooter in India. We’re pretty certain that this is the most funkiest looking scooter that will ever grace Indian streets if and when it does see the light of the day in India.
Understatement certainly not being one it’s strong suits, the Yamaha BW125 simply grabs you by your family jewels and screams look at me. That is how alluring it looks while still retaining a bunch of class. In the go department, you get a grunty four valver 125cc engine that pumps out about 11 Bhp and 10 Nm of torque. That is plenty of zip to stay ahead of the crowd at the traffic lights.
Crisp throttle response as well as decent frugality could be a given as the 125cc four stroker will feature fuel injection to meter in the petrol. The BW125 is sharp handler and this is something that people across the world have testified about, as the BW125 already has been selling in many of Yamaha’s developed overseas markets. Aiding the handling, you get chunky 12 inchers at both ends that feature a telescopic layout to scuttle across the Indian moonscape with relative ease. Stopping also will be pretty sharp as the Yamaha BW125 does feature a 220mm disc brake up front. Stunters take note.
Anticlimax time. Expect to fork out about INR 60,000, and that is if Yamaha India gets benevolent, for the BW125 as this very scooter sells at almost $3600 in the United States. We’re expecting Yamaha India Motor to build the BW125 right here in India as the CBU route would simply put it out of contention considering the gargantuan price tag it sports abroad.
Then, why will this scooter make it to India and does Yamaha India expect brisk sales? The answer to these questions would be, Yamaha Motor India will launch the BW125 as their flagship scooter, much like the Yamaha R15, which was brought in mainly to reignite the Yamaha Brand which had almost flickered out of contention.
While the Yamaha BW125 might not sell as well as say a Suzuki Access 125, it could still find plenty of takers as more and more well heeled Indian youth join the retro funk scooter bandwagon.

Deepak,
Why, may we ask?
If you can be a little more constructive with your commenting, that’ll help us improve.
This, as we consider the comments of a certain Editor-in-chief of BikeAdvice.in pretty seriously.

Nice Blog
Yamaha should seriously bring the scooter to India. If they could sell it for 50,000 for the features that are mentioned it would definitely be a best seller for Yamaha, believe me it would even surpass the sales figures of the Yamama bikes

BEST SCOTER FOR INDIAN ROAD
Please also ensure that the vehicle is readily available. Taking advance and keeping the customer to wait is not a healthy experience. This may lead some people taking advantage of selling the vehicle after collecting something extra (under the table). Customer Waiting for long time is not a proof of quality of product, as few people are thinking.
I would love to buy a stylish scooter of Yamaha.
